The 5th Advanced Course in Cell Culture Bioprocess and Bioreactor Engineering came to a successful conclusion on December 17, 2021. This training course was organized by Prof. Tan Wensong's team from the State Key Laboratory of Bioreactor Engineering, East China University of Science and Technology, and co-organized by Shanghai BioEngine Sci-Tech Co., Ltd. It has been 8 years since the training course was first held in 2013, and the 5 training courses have not only trained many talents for animal cell culture technology and related fields in China but also promoted the rapid development of the biomedical industry based on animal cell culture technology.
This training course continues the excellent tradition of the previous sessions, which is full of dry goods and analyzes the cutting-edge technology of the industry development in an in-depth and simple manner. The course content focused on animal cell culture technologies for recombinant protein (antibody) drugs, viral vaccines, and stem cell/cellular gene therapy industries. The course is based on knowledge of cell bio physiology in process engineering, teaching methods and experiences in cell culture processes and media design, development and optimization, and introducing metrological and kinetic computational methods for the analysis and understanding of process data. He also emphasizes the concept of bioreactor engineering, discusses in depth the design and scaling up of large-scale cell culture processes and their bioreactors and intensive optimization operations as well as the key engineering issues involved, and discusses the design and optimal regulation of biopharmaceutical product quality from a process engineering perspective.

The poster session and interactive session, which were popular among the participants in the past, were also very enthusiastic this time. The participants had a direct dialogue with the front-line personnel of the cell culture national team on the latest research results of cell culture and exchanged ideas freely.
In this training course, two new interactive sub-forums on antibodies and vaccines were set up, inviting elites from the domestic biopharmaceutical industry to share their valuable experience in the industrial application of animal cell culture in drug development, process development, and scale-up.
